Fifa 14 Case Study

Print

  1. Find a FIFA14 print advert and describe how it promotes the game.
A print advert of Messi holding Keys for a vehicle and has a quotation that says 'start your journey'. This makes the audience think that Messi is a normal person and you are just like him so you should do what he is doing.
  2. What key conventions of print adverts can you find on the FIFA ad? Product name? Font? Slogan? Central image? Colour?
This print advert has a slogan and a central image of Messi as a casual human being.
  3. Find three reviews for FIFA14 that were originally published in videogame magazines. Are they positive or negative about the game? Copy and paste one quote from each review.
"FIFA 14 rocks!!!!! Its the best football game till date. Much more realistic features, improved gameplay than FIFA 13.Awesome game play much…" "This is the best version so far, but also the less innovative. It feels like EA Sports is absolutely focused on next gen consoles, so there are few additions here. However, it is as fun as always, and the best football simulator this year for current consoles." "FIFA 14 is far from a revolutionary release, and it's arguably inferior to the much improved PES 2014 in terms of pure footballing gameplay. That said, FIFA 14 is the most complete virtual footballing experience available today. Whether in single or multiplayer, there's enough to keep fans busy well into the new football season and beyond." All of these reviews are positive
  4. Why are magazine reviews effective in promoting the game to FIFA14's target audience?
This is effective in having a positive word of mouth around the world. If the reviews are positive then audiences will tell their friends and family that it is an amazing game. Therefore, they will get more purchases and recognition.
  5. In your opinion, is print or e-media more effective in reaching the FIFA14 target audience?
E-media is effective as you can reach out to thousands of people at one time. However, print is more effective in my opinion. This is because you can have a message to those who want to have a look at your print advert only.

Broadcast

  1. Watch the FIFA14 TV advert on YouTube. How the does the advert attract an audience?
This attracts an audience because Messi is presented as a casual person who isnt admired. This is good because the audience will feel that they are exactly the same as Messi so they should play Fifa14.
  2. Why is Lionel Messi driving the van?
To emphasise that he is a casual person just like the audience watching.
  3. How does the TV advert feature the FIFA14 brand? Font? Slogan? Main star?
The TV advert for Fifa14 has a very srtong slogan. That is "We are Fifa14". This makes the audience feel that without them fifa is nothing. Also, there are many main stars such as Drake, Bale, Messi and Hernandez. This is a clever way of attracting audiences as these stars are favoured.
  4. Why is there a combination of famous footballers, celebrities and regular people in the advert?
This is to attract all types of audiences. So those who don't really recognise Hernandez will recognise Drake and think because Drake is playing it as a casual normal person. The game of Fifa14 is for everyone.
  5. Watch the FIFA14 trailer on YouTube. How does it differ from the TV advert?
The Fifa14 trailer has a lot of game play that show the players doing extraordinary things. However, the tv advert has the superstars as casual people.
  6. Why is the trailer effective in promoting the game?
The trailer could amaze audiences as the game play is shown. The audience could find the game play great and unexpected so the game play is there to sell the game. The trailer presents the superstars doing amazing things, this makes the audience think that they can do this if they can buy the game.

E-media

  1. Visit the FIFA14 website. How does it attract and maintain the interest of a FIFA14 fan?

  2. How many 'likes' has the FIFA14 Facebook wall had?

Ask football relates questions to allow fans to interact.Promotes upcoming videogames from franchise with cross-promotion with music artists.
Competition for football related products for fans as 'FAN REWARDS'
    Promotes YouTube E-Media advert
Asks football relates questions to allow fans to interact

    #FIFA14
  6. What is the FIFA14 Twitter account currently tweeting about? Find three recent tweets and explain why they would appeal to the FIFA14 target audience.

When was it launched?
Released on November 20, 2012.

How does the gameplay work?
PlanetSide 2 is a re-imagining of planetside, featuring the same world, factions and taking place at roughly the same time period. It features territory control in an open-world, large battles featuring up to 2000 players per continent on foot or in land/air vehicles. The territory system differs greatly from that of the original, being more free-form and based on a hexagonal territory control system. SOE has been taking into account balance issues from the first game.

What are the six different player classes in the game?
  • The Infiltrator is a sniper class with special abilities of cloaking and hacking, and can use sniper rifles, scout rifles and submachine guns to deliver a devastating effect.
  • The Light Assault class is a scout who uses carbines, submachine guns and shotguns. The Light Assault's special ability is Jump Jets, which allow them to fly through the air for a short period of time.
  • The Combat Medic is a healing class. Their weapons include assault rifles, shotguns and submachine guns. The Combat Medic's special abilities allows them to heal and resurrect other players.
  • The Engineer class has the special ability of repairing vehicles, turrets, and MAX Units. The engineer also has the ability to build anti-infantry and anti-vehicle turrets. The Engineer's weapons include carbines, shotguns submachine guns and battle rifles.
  • The Heavy Assault class has light machine guns, submachine guns, shotguns, batte rifles, and also Rocket Launchers, which are effective at destroying enemy vehicles. They also have the special ability of shields to help them endure heavy fire.
  • The MAX class has a mobile armored suit that allows them to take significant damage before dying. However, due to the suit they are also the slowest class. They have access to anti-infantry, anti-vehicle, and anti-air weapons. Max units cost resources to use

What is the story or narrative to the game?
A science fiction  set approximately 300 years after the discovery of Auraxis, although the chronology of the game universe starts a few years before. After the Earth has nearly come to ruin following a devastating war, the world's governments came to a consensus and united under one banner: the world-wide Terran Republic (TR).

Now write a target audience demographic for each faction from Planetside 2 – it will be similar to the overall target audience but think carefully about changes in age, education or employment:

The Terran Republic

The Vanu Sovereignty

The New Conglomerates

Now use what you have learned about psychographic profiling to choose potential psychographic groups for each of the three factions:
